All your perfects genres5/28/2023 “When you meet someone who is good for you, they won’t fill you with insecurities by focusing on your flaws. I loved their romance, openness and devotion to each other. It made the experience pleasurable because recapping the times in the past where they were happy and without a care in the world brought more perspective to the story. I liked how the author wrote the book with each chapter alternated in past and present times. I enjoyed reading this story although the theme is a very heavy one. Graham and Quinn have to fight for their marriage despite all that they are going through and this book highlights their journey and how they overcome their fears with utmost perfection. These issues have down-spiraled into other problems in their otherwise perfect marriage such as depression, miscarriage, infidelity, grief and abuse. They have now been married for seven years and are struggling with infertility issues. ‘All Your Perfects’ is a beautifully written story about Quinn and Graham who meet under unusual circumstances and later fall in love. I was particularly drawn to this book because it is a romance novel about a married couple which is usually rare. However, upon reflection, I decided to give the author another try by reading this book. It wasn’t what I had expected so I wasn’t keen on reading another book by her. “If you only shine light on your flaws, all your perfects will dim.”Įarlier this year, I read a book by the author ‘ Regretting You’ (You can read my review HERE). Ben lerner 10 04 summary5/28/2023 I don’t think it’s an affectation, but I think it’s real “poet-y.” It is a criticism I forgive b/c I see that the tension between authenticity (of time) and inauthenticity (of time especially exemplified in the Whole Foods/Instant coffee scene - which narrative context of time determines the Real, the Market (or its interpretation of Universal time) or our intuition (something like Whitmanic time, where time is experienced not on a linear, progressive plane but a circular, lateral one?)) is a crucial thread that runs throughout 10:04 and in Lerner’s other work. Ryan Chang: I know what you mean though it won’t bear any difference to your reading, I can attest personally to the diction & syntax of the narrator and Lerner himself (indeed, he does speak like that). The narrative voice strikes me as so thoroughly inauthentic that I want to grab the narrator by the lapels and shout, Quit aping Sebald, quit trying to show how clever you are, and just observe and report! Again, it’s probably me not him. I don’t know if it’s that I’m almost exactly the same age as Lerner/the narrator or what, but I really really hate it so far! He’s very smart and the sentences are often great, but I find myself rolling my eyes at a lot of what he’s doing-it’s probably me not him. Įdwin Turner: Got an e-galley of the Lerner book. Saving grace by debbie babitt5/27/2023 Following this, she dabbled in playwriting and wrote theatre reviews for the New York Law Journal and then worked as copy director for two major Manhattan publishing houses. Babitt pursued acting professionally after graduation but quickly found herself rewriting lines and adding multiple pages of biography and back story for her characters. Though she continued to write, she focused more exclusively on performing. In college, Babitt double majored in English and theatre. It’s only coincidence, however, that her 2021 debut thriller, Saving Grace, is about an orphan who goes to live with her aunt and uncle. In fact, Babitt started writing when she was about eight-a 200-page novel about an orphan who goes to live with her aunt. Her exposure began with her mother’s interest in suspense novels, which turned Babitt into an avid reader who also wrote a lot as a kid: articles for the school paper, poems, stories. Debbie Babitt grew up in a home where language was paramount. Chaos james gleick book5/27/2023 Īn enhanced ebook edition was released by Open Road Media in 2011, adding embedded video and hyperlinked notes. The book covers chaos theory under the lens of four themes: sensitive dependence on initial conditions, self-similarity, universality, and nonlinearity. The book approaches the history of chaos theory chronologically, starting with Edward Norton Lorenz and the butterfly effect, through Mitchell Feigenbaum, and ending with more modern applications. The text remains in print and is widely used as an introduction to the topic for the mathematical layperson. It portrays the efforts of dozens of scientists whose separate work contributed to the developing field. It describes the Mandelbrot set, Julia sets, and Lorenz attractors without using complicated mathematics. The book was published on Octoby Viking Books.Ĭhaos: Making a New Science was the first popular book about chaos theory. It was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1987, and was shortlisted for the Science Book Prize in 1989. Chaos: Making a New Science is a debut non-fiction book by James Gleick that initially introduced the principles and early development of the chaos theory to the public. A little cloud james joyce5/27/2023 Even if he suspects there’s something wrong about him, he can’t stop being jealous. Nevertheless, by acting in this way, he’s losing and destroying himself.Īs everyone else, Little Chandler believes Gallaher’s trick. Gallaher’s trick works and everyone sees him as he wants to be seen. Maybe he hasn’t understood his wretchedness yet and he’s unconsciously living a big lie, or maybe he knows to be a loser and he’s just pretending to be someone else. He presents himself as an haughty, arrogant man who enjoys drinking and having fun, but this is not the real himself, it’s just a character he’s trying to create. He behaves like that to cover up all the mistakes he has made and his dissatisfaction. He shows off his “accomplishments” on purpose because he wants to underline his high social position, his important job and his richness. Gallaher pretends to be rich, powerful and happy, whereas he’s actually sad and broken. However, I don’t think Gallaher has really changed and has really become a boaster, this is just a mask he wears because he doesn’t want to show who he actually is, that is to say a failure. The real Gallaher is not the man who returns to Dublin after some years, as Little Cloud says this is not the Gallaher he used to know. From my point of view Gallaher is a very interesting character: at first he simply seems an arrogant man, but actually there is much more to discover in order to really understand him. A Little Cloud is one of the most fascinating stories from Dubliners. |
